Cape Verde
-
In Cape Verde, an estimated 1 in 8 people live with vision loss, yet the country has limited capacity to meet the need. Few eye care professionals serve a population spread across multiple islands, making surgical care and outreach especially challenging. For low-income families, the cost of treatment and prescription glasses creates an additional barrier, leaving many children and adults without the care they need.
-
Since 2018, CharityVision has partnered with the Ministry of Health, local eye care professionals, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to strengthen eye care across Cape Verde. Together, we have equipped clinics, trained cataract surgeons, expanded low-vision and retinal care, and launched nationwide school vision screenings.
We continue improving these programs and addressing a key barrier: affordable prescription glasses. By expanding local optical services, training providers, and educating schools and families about children’s vision, we are building a sustainable eye care system for Cape Verde.
