Madagascar

  • Madagascar has a severe shortage of eye care in rural areas with only 5 ophthalmologists to serve 17.2 million residents. Madagascar also has one of the lowest cataract surgery rates globally.  Widespread uncorrected vision problems, especially in low-income and rural areas, stem from lack of affordable eyecare and glasses. Most eyeglass users live on less than $1.90/day and cannot afford services.

  • As accessibility is a big issue, we will continue to support the local doctors with consumables.  Transporting equipment from the U.S. has also been difficult and costly, so we are looking for in country doctors and partners that can collaborate with our efforts in the country. We also built the Fitsaboana Maso Salfa eye clinic in Fianarantsoa in 2016, fully equipping it with necessary equipment and supplies to help.
