In Uganda, severe conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure also contribute to vision impairment.
According to a 2024 Ministry of Health report, four in ten Ugandans suffer from vision problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and trachoma. However, very few seek medical help due to their economic status. Eye care is a luxury; most people cannot afford private care. Additionally, government hospitals offering eye screenings are often too distant for many, resulting in more untreated blindness cases.
Public hospitals struggle with inadequate equipment and a lack of specialized doctors, leaving many eye conditions untreated.
-
CharityVision collaborates with hospitals and NGOs to improve affordable eye care access. They provide local doctors with surgical kits to reduce costs and enhance efficiency. Despite reaching many communities, lack of screening equipment and funding hinder progress.
Immediate Needs:
• Advanced screening and treatment for severe cases.
• More surgical kits for hospitals and clinics to make eye surgeries affordable for low-income individuals.Addressing these gaps will improve access to eye care and reduce preventable blindness in Uganda.
